$500 Annual GMEC Bursary in Memory of Ron Staal

Ron Staal enriched many peoples lives, first as a teacher, then as a principal and finally as a horseman.

He taught at the following schools: Foley Brook from 1954-1958, Anfield from 1958-1959, Sissom Ridge from 1959-1964, and Berry Mills from 1967-1989.

From 1967-1989 he joined the Magnetic Hill school faculty as their principal before finally retiring in 1989.

In 1987, Ron really got involved in the horse community. His first passon was for driving. He joined the Morgan Club in 1988 as well as the Greater Moncton Equestrian Club in 1989, serving as their Treasurer for several years. It was Ron and several other GMEC members’ enthusiasm that brought Driving into the Club. He had driving clinics at the Mare’s Nest where his horses were stabled. He also hauled out his Morgan/Paint cross, Raven, to Horizon Farm where they participated in Cavalier Riding Club-Therapeutic Riding for the Disabled. In 1990, always looking for a way to better his horsemanship skills so he could then help others, Ron took riding lessons for 4 or 5 years.

Ron did not allow the words “I can’t” in his vocabulary. His words were “I can help you” and he spoke those words to the very end.

On November 5th 2002, Ron passed away after a battle with cancer.

To commemorate Ron Staal’s memory, every year a $500 Annual GMEC Bursary is drawn, continuing Ron’s efforts to help people.
